Blotchy Apples!

Hello!
Just been for a wander down the garden to the apple tree, as it's nearing harvest time, and I've noticed that pretty much all the apples look blotchy! Like small round blotches all over the apples, some are worse than others. Any idea what's caused this? Will the apples still be ok to eat?

(and if so, has someone got a good, simple, apple chutney recipe?)

Thanks :p

Sorry not a clue what it is, maybe someone on the greenfingers board can help?.

Have you tried peeling one, if its ok under the peel then I would use them.

Think theres an apple chutney recipe on the index.

I've moved your thread over to the greenfingered board to see if you can get some advice on the problem with your apples.

For chutney recipes have a look here:

Haven't got any answers, but have blotchy apples, too. For the first time. Some have splits/holes in the splotches and insects feeding there. I'll be picking the worst and start on apple crumbles, usually use the early still tart apples that have fallen this way. May have to do chutney, too.
  • Are they black, roundish spots on the fruit? Do they occur on the leaves too?

If so its Scab, it's a very common disease on apples and pears. Spray with a general fungicide throughout the growing season, it's to late to do much about it this year though.

    My recipe is:

500g cooking apples (I've used eaters and they were OK)
    1 med onion
2 birds eye chillies (or 1!)
    250g demerara sugar
1 tsp ground allspice (or mixed spice)
1 tsp ground cloves (I use less than this)
    1/2 tsp sea salt
    black pepper
1 heaped tbsp chopped or grated fresh ginger
    1 tsp turmeric
    350ml cider vinegar
4 x 250ml jars or equivalent (I found it made less)

    peel and roughly chop applies
finely chop onion and chillies (de-seed these first)
put everything into pan, bring to boi
cook over med heat 30-40 mins, until mixture thickens (may take longer)
    spoon into sterilised jars.

Looking at them again, it's in clusters, some apples aren't affected at all. Spots are small and round on the appples, leaves are a bit dry, some crumpled, a few are half brown, not many, wouldn't have thought unusual for this time of year. But as I haven't sprayed for anything, I don't expect them to be perfect. No definite round spots on leaves, not like you can get on roses.

Mine are a bit brown inside. A bit like when you cut them open and leave
    them.

Not sure if they were picked too late or just suffering from too much water?

Still a fairly young tree. 3rd year its fruited.

Could possibly be bitter pit if it's discoloured inside?
