Could I do a balance transfer to a bank account 
if so, how long would it take, before funds show up?

you can if your card allows to MBNA do (so abbey virgin and a&l) also egg. It can take uto 6 working days (but usually around three)No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

egg money is the best bet here, known as a 'routing card' in stoozish.
But you will need two cards, one (card A) which gives you the 0% deal (but watch out for the fees) plus an egg money card, which will allow the debit balance, caused by transferring a balance to card A, to be balance Transferred back out to your current account.
