I bought my son a mini DV camera and would like to find some simple, preferably free, Video editing software that we can edit down some of the clips he's taken and cut out the bits we don't want. Any recommendations please?
Thanks

Depending on what version of Windows he has, Windows Moviemaker should be available for free.0

Windows Movie Maker can ingest and handle MiniDV natively if you connect the camera to the computer via firewire (so it can control the deck from within Windows too!), otherwise you may need to import/capture the footage to another file format which Windows Movie Maker may not handle natively.
If you want something with a bit more oomph than WMM, you can try hitfilm.com which is cheap and has a graphical effects engine built in. I tried out the beta versions, it was pretty decent and well integrated
If you don't want the whizbang of hitfilm, people speak very kindly abouth Sony Vegas which has various editions from cheap to moderate - it's a very solid, relatively easy consumer video editing system. It's actually a better system than FCP for most users (but don't tell the Apple users that, it'll only get them excited).
If you want something powerful but with a frankly puzzling interface at times, lightworks is a professional system which has gone open source and free - you can always give it a go.
If you want to spend a lot of quids - Avid is the daddy still. I suggest you don't start out with Avid, but if you find you're really getting a feel and taste for it, it would be a great progression to use professionally in the future!0
