Do I need a new motherboard

Sorting out an old computer. Its about 3 years old but

Sorting out an old pc. About 3 yrs old but was working fine. Not used for quite a while. Booted up fine, keyboard working but the new usb mouse not responding . None of the usb working. No mouse picked up plug & play. Is it likely that the mb is kaput & is it easy to install?
Appreciate any info
Thanks:confused:

Have you tried reinstalling the usb drivers for your motherboard ?

Have you tried a non usb mouse, & checked the usb port with some other item. I have had strange issues with usb ports & mice & using a non usb mouse has fixed it & no issue could be found on the MB

If it's just the usb then you can get a usb pci card quite cheaply

make sure usb is enabled in the bios.
if the puter has off for some years then the battery may be suspect and the bios config maybe returned to the default.
    Get some gorm.

Yep - tried a non usb mouse - still no deal. USB is enabled in bios- I checked But
I haven't reinstalled drivers because, the new mouse doesn't have any discs.... but I
will search for some & see if that helps first - if I can't find the specific named mouse brand it was very cheap will any drivers do?
How do you connect a usb board ? Are they cheap to buy?
    thanks again m

reset the MB - if you havn't by pulling battery 10 secs. Might be a dead battery as suggested. From what you write I think it may have popped though

ithink the drivers you need will be on the motherboard disk, it is also worth doing

Removing the battery 10 seconds won't suffice, there are typically charged capacitors around. You'd also need to short a jumper most likely located around the battery, but you'll need to consult the motherboard manual to be sure which jumper that is.
I'd also suggest to try a hub, but a POWERED hub, i.e. a hub that comes with a power supply. I often had problems with old motherboard due to them not providing enough current to the USB ports. A powered hub can help in that it draws the power from its power supply and not from the motherboard.
You can also try to re-install the driver has someone suggested, but I don't know many motherboards which come with a USB driver, since it's a generic driver bundled with Windows :)

Not sure what popped through means!! I tidied the original mb discs into the file marked bin @ a yr ago. Duh. But will look for drivers tonight. Got into the hardware log in XP & its 2 problem devices. But because cant resize the window without mouse cant really understand what the prob is. But its something like
    1 Mouse ....
    2 PCI Quick controller.......???
Duh !!! Going to bed disgusted will try 2mrrow nite to find drivers & will get back to you. Great to have people who have a notion what they are doing to talk to ....

I think from that it may just be a driver issue. win xp disk to fix current installation & The MB disk is worth a try. Even a complete format and reinstall wouldn't hurt
Cricri is correct that the MB jumpers or the battery terminals (battery removed) need shorting to ensure a reset, also worth doing if the pc has been idle for yrs.
'popped' - make of it what you think - lol
