Toilet training while on holiday

We are in the process of toilet training DS2 who is at that point where he will use the potty if it is readily available but will also have accidents if he doesn't reach it quite in time. So far, we haven't ventured out of the house yet pants free, because he only managed to do his first wee in the potty yesterday even though we've been working on this for a week or so, but today he's been quite good..

We are off on holiday for 2 weeks on Sunday, staying in an apartment in Greece. I don't particularly want to put him back into nappies for a fortnight as he has been doing really well since the penny dropped, and I think it won't be long until he is completely trained.

I've ordered a travel potty online and will go equipped with wipes and pull ups just in case (and swim nappies for when he goes in the pool). But is there anything else I am likely to need while we are away to make life easier, or can anyone offer any tips as to how they have managed while away?

He's due to start nursery about 3 weeks after we get back from holiday and I would really like him to be completely out of nappies by then which is another reason not to take a break while we are away.

Being in an apartment you'll be able to carry on as at home indoors.

If you'd been at home wearing proper pants to go out would have been the next step. When you're travelling and out and about I'd advise he wears the pull ups but you treat them instead of ordinary pants. So keep asking him and encouraging him to use the potty but he'll have the pull ups on to prevent embarassing accidents.

It's probably not ideal timing but at least you won't have broken the habit entirely and you can pick up from wherever he's at when you get home.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday.

Would it be worth taking along something you could use to clean up any accidents in the apartment (when I stayed in an apartment in Greece, there weren't any cleaning products provided)? I'm sure you've already thought of this!

we found when training my son that pants made him forget as they were snug like a nappy, so we had a few days in just an over long top for modesty, and then a couple of weeks in loose shorts and tracksuit bottoms - a warm holiday location with stone flooring sounds like quite a good place to have him half dressed, or even in swimming trunks as they'd rinse out and dry really quickly.

-watch out for puddles on shiny floors though, I had a proper comedy fall one time!

I dont have any children myself as yet but working in a playgroup we always have children starting to potty train, A few parents have put the children in pants and then a pull up on top, that way if they do have an accident then the children still feel the wet sensation unlike with just pull ups where it soaks up the wee. This does seem to work with some children and they quickly realise that they need the toilet. Again witht the others, plenty of change of clothes and wipes. Have a good holiday :)

sorry, for the p.s and the content- but it was always holidays that caused bowel trouble for my son, from training time onwards - treat food, me not paying attention, different bathrooms, routine out the window etc ended up with him getting bunged up a few times before I realised. I know with potty training a lot of kids wait for the night time nappy for that anyway for a while, but it was just a thought.

Stick with it and I'm sure he'll be most of the way there by then. Our son treated pull ups like a nappy, so I'd go with the swimming shorts option if you feel like you need to with lots of time on the beach where it doesn't matter if I were you. Oh, and take a potty with you - no one will care!
