problem with PIN number on new John Lewis Partnercard

I recently got one of these and have not yet used it to buy anything. I tested the card on an HSBC cash dispenser as I wanted to change the PIN number. I put the card in and entered my given number. That appeared to be fine. I chose the Change your PIN option and entered my chosen number. It asked me to enter it a 2nd time which I did but it told me that it was wrong and spat out the card. I tried the original number but that was also rejected.
JL told me not to try again and sent me a new PIN (exactly the same as the original one). I repeated the whole process but it happened the same way. HSBC was unable to help.
JL does not seem to know what the problem is. They asked me to try buying something in a shop. If it doesn't work, they will have to cancel the card and send a new one which will take too long so I will probably give up on it.

What numbers were you trying to enter?
Some will not let you have for instance your year of birth or say something like 1111.0 -
I'm not convinced that the PIN can be changed at an ATM (although not having the card I've obviously never tried it). From what I can see the card is issued by John Lewis themselves rather than through a partner bank. Looking on the Link website's PIN change page it lists the institutions that allow the PIN to be changed at an ATM not owned by the issuing bank - John Lewis are not on this list. Have JL confirmed to you that a PIN change is even possible?

It's a Mastercard (I think) so it can be used at any ATM that accepts Mastercard's (which is them all basically).0 -

You can the change the PIN at any ATM displaying the Mastercard logo. The card is actually issued by HSBC. I have one of these cards and have had no problem changing the PIN at an ATM.
To OP....have you tried using a different ATM? Maybe the chip on the card is faulty. It shouldn't take that long for John Lewis to send you a replacement card. I had to call for a replacement one earlier this year after the CV2 code wore off the back The new card arrived within a few days.0 -
I've reported them, same post on loads of threads. Very childish.
