Audi may have an awful multitronic autobox, avoid. Merc will have a proper auto box, but fluid changes at 40,000 miles are required.

This is a good site for plenty of info from knowlegable folk, including those who repair Mercs for a living.

A friend of mine had a 52 Audi A4 1.9? TDI for years, he swore by it!.. The only issue he had was the front bulbs kept on blowing...

He's got another Audi now; never had any issues with that either...

Merc's will be full of rust and electrical problems..

Audi will be fine. If you want auto go for a Quattro as the 2WD versions from 2000 year will be CVT which are crap and costly when they fail.

EDIT: Someone mentioned Saab 93's - avoid the diesels. 2.2 is slow and noisey. The newer 1.9 is ovely and smooth but full of all sorts of problems.

The Audi A4 2wd auto gearboxes are called Multi-Chronic for a reason. Forget about the badge with that budget and get a Focus/Mondeo
