Insurance due with an open claim.....?

Hi there,

I have been an MSE member for years but first time poster so just had to create a new profile :)

Anyway I hope this is in the right place and someone has some good advice.

I have an open home insurance claim on my contents for a loss, this is currently going through and I hope it will be resolved shortly. Unfortunately this happened towards the end of my policy.

My policy has now ended and the claim is still ongoing. I want to renew my policy (not with my current insurer as they have proved completely useless hence the ongoing claim).

However, most of the comparisons only return max 5 insurers and this is with me guessing how much the finalised claim will be. I have called several and they say they will not insure me until my open claim is settled anyway.

How do I proceed?

Can I take out buildings insurance with someone, since I only have the contents claim open? Or does the open claim count on both contents and buildings since it was a joint policy?

I am quite nervous about getting this wrong and having no insurance. As part of the delay has was because the broker initially claimed I had not disclosed how close I live to water and that took 4 weeks for them to investigate and uphold the policy as it was claimed invalid initially. Even though my claim was for a loss and nothing to do with water. Argh!!!

I am now henceforth very cautious and nervous about taking out my insurance correctly.

Many thanks for reading and any good advice is welcome :)

Its possible different companies will have their own terms for an open claim.

Some may insure the building but not contents or they may not cover you at all until settled.

Lots of phone calls needed i think.

Or renew the insurance and cancel it later? But do check the cancellation charges.

Probably best to renew the policy if you still can. You can change later if you want.

Ah. 2 months or less and Diect Line Group companies are usually ok with it.

Over that, maybe try BIBA http://www.biba.org.uk/

Or just fork out for the renewal and look to move when its resolved. Lots of companies will pay your cancellation fee if you switch.
