Ordered & Paid on-line now got VAT invoice?

Back in May I ordered some Jubilee medals on-line from the Royal Mint. As normal I paid the full amount along with delivery charge. The items arrived promptly with no problems.
A few weeks ago I received a letter from the Royal Mint, it was an invoice for VAT???
I assumed i'd been charged the full amount when I made the on-line purchase and i'm surprised to now receive an invoice for VAT as no mention was made of it not being charged at the time of the order. Is this legal? As I paid by card, can the Royal Mint just take the amount out of my bank account using the details i'd previously given them?

The Royal Mint (or any other business) won't sell items exclusive of VAT and charge for this at a later date.
Are you sure that what you have received isn't just a detailed VAT invoice for the purchase showing what you have already paid?0 -
The Royal Mint obviously think they have a licence to print money..."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Is it actually a demand for more money? I agree with shaun, it would seem more likely to just be a VAT receipt. Weird that it turns up so much later but these things do happen!Thinking critically since 1996....0

Hi thanks for the replies.
It's definitely an invoice stating VAT 7.48, amount due 7.480 -
I would ignore in the first instance and see where they go with it. If they start chasing then ask them to explain themselves. Sounds strange to me.0
