natwest from blue to purple debit card !

I've now been with natwest for over a year and phoned last week to ask about changing to the purple card

i was told i would have to do this in branch.

I did this yesterday and was informed by an adviser that it didn't matter what card i had and that my current blue card would let me use it on trains petrol pumps etc which from reading this forum isn't the case. The adviser did put in a request for a replacement card which will have the same pin etc and should come later this week.

I'm doubtful anything will change and wonder what my next step should be ?

95% of customer advisors who works in the bank haven't got a clue as none of them have be trained to answer this question.

bugsy i did get that impression from this forum. last week when i spoke to natwest on the phone they understood exactly what i wanted to do but they couldn't do it and advised me to go into branch. when i did the guy who was quite young just said my card should work on trains etc which i knew not to be the case which is quite frustrating when the customer knows more than the adviser !!

i'm hoping the replacement will be a purple one but i doubt it lol

Well that depends on what you want to do.

My advice is to try for a credit card and set an appropriately low limit for your petrol/train use. A better protected solution than debit.

Anyway have you tried your blue card yet? If so and it failed, if you choose you could raise a formal complaint about how your issue was handled in branch. It may or may not make a difference, you may or may not feel better but if they do not process the complaint accurately and to time you may end up a few pounds richer.

Up to you really how you exercise your customer choice.

The branch you require a service card. I'm not sure if they still exist however you could fill in an application form for one.

I already have a credit card but i'm conisidering closing my santander current account and using my natwest as my main current account. With santander i can use it on the train etc the blue natwest card i haven't tried as yet but assumed since its blue i wouldn't be able to. lets see what they send me and it its works. If this fails i might actually go through the complaints procedure see if it helps hopefully it will.

@stclair is the application online or would i have to go into the branch again ?

Yes pop into the branch and ask them if they have a service card application form you could complete. Now all the cards are visa branch staff don't know the difference between them functionality wise. My department used to asses accounts for them but it was taken away from us a few years ago. The branch may also understand better if you ask about getting a contactless card.
