When I mentioned what salary I was on before and the disparity between that and what I was offered, I quite truthfully stated that happiness, conditions and training opportunities were far more important to me than cash in hand each month.
You have to convince you are going to be a stayer, so closer shorter comute and time on their own are not enough.
You need to stop them thinking you will still be looking localy for a better paid job.0 -
Thanks for all the replies.
I have seen 2 jobs advertised (from the same organisation) which is closer to home. One is a 'co-ordinator' level with a starting salary of £2,000 more than I am currently earning and rising to £6,000 more than I am on and the other is an 'officer' level starting on £3,500 less than I am currently earn and rising to the salary I am earning now.
I am currently at 'Officer' level and line manage 4 people and I think that the 'co-ordinator' role is way above me as it pays a lot more, but having looked at the Job Description and Person Spec, I currently do a lot of what it says.
I have nothing to lose, so am going to apply for both posts. I suspect that the 'Co-ordinator' post will be filled internally and is being advertised as a formality, however I may as well show interest. The closing date is next Friday, but I am going away on Monday for a week, so have almost completed one application today and the other will have to be done on Saturday.0 -

Just wondering if I can have some advice please?
I have almost completed the two applications and re: references is says:
"please note that references will be taken up prior to interview, therefore if you do not wish us to contact your current employer, please tick this box".
What would you do? Tick the box or not? My boss knows that I am looking for a new job because I had an interview a month ago (obviously wasn't successful), however I have not told my boss that I am applying for these posts. Should I tick the box or not? If I don't tick the box, therefore they are not able to contact employer for a reference prior to interview, will this go against me as if I have something to hide?0 -
Frankly I don't think anyone will judge you adversely for saying no, but on the other hand I think that if you leave aside the fact you don't like the job, you have some good reasons for wanting to be closer to home, so I think I'd opt for telling the boss that you are not really wanting to leave (white lies never hurt anyone) but your personal circumstances mean that if something closer to home comes up you feel you have to apply for the sake of your family commitments. Most people would get that. And it burns no bridges..0

Thanks. I am lucky that I do have a close working relationship with my boss and they know that I am looking to change jobs to be closer to home and for family reasons, even though my boss was secretly happy that I didn't get the job that I last went for.
So I won't tick the box, as my boss is aware that I am looking to work closer to home, so if they have a phone call for a reference, it won't be a massive shock to my boss.0 -
Wondering if I can have some advice please?
A few weeks ago I applied for two posts with the same company. One was a 'co-ordinator' level with a starting salary of £2,000 more than I am currently earning and rising to £6,000 more than I am on and the other was an 'officer' level starting on £3,500 less than I am currently earn and rising to the salary I am earning now.
Anyway, last week I had an interview for the 'Co-ordinator' post but unfortunately didn't get it - it was way above me and a very tough interview but the experience was good. I hadn't heard anything about the 'Officer' post within 5 working days of the closing date and company says if not heard anything after 5 days you can deem your application unsuccessful, so forgot about it and assumed it had been filled internally.
Anyway, I have now received an email inviting me for an interview for the 'Officer' post and after a bit of name internet searching the person who will be interviewing applicants for the post has been promoted to 'co-ordinator' and it is their job that they are now interviewing for.
I feel that I want to go for the interview but also feel a bit embarrassed because I went for the 'Co-ordinator' post and didn't get it and the new co-ordinator will be aware of this.
If you were me, would you go for the interview or not? Or would you feel too embarrassed as it is the same company?0 -
I would go for it. I'd possibly feel a bit awkward, but it wouldn't stop me going. Especially since you say you are currently working in an officer role. You really don't need to feel embarrassed about going for something at the same level.[FONT="][FONT="] Fighting the biggest battle of my life.

Thanks jayII
I suppose I will feel embarrassed because I'll be interviewed by HR again, but will obviously have to tailor my interview for the 'officer' post. I will also feel awkward, especially as I know that the Co-ordinator will know that I went for their job!
I have also applied for another job, closing date was a few days ago. I am hoping to get an interview for that one too - hopefully before the 'officer' interview. That job pays less than what I'm on but I know the job inside out and it's a job I would love to do. Either way I like the both jobs that I have gone for.
It's typical, I've been in my job for over 7 years and recently decided to look for a new one and have had 2 interviews in the space of 2 months, with another interview in a few weeks. It is all good experience for me and building up my 'interview confidence'.0 -
Morning SD, I read the post on your diary but I was thinking about what to say and still a little unsure.
I guess the first message is - wherever you have applied to should realise you really want to join them.
Secondly, you clearly have sufficient knowledge-experience to take on a number of roles.
It may be worth weaving these two points in to your interview.
Don't be embarrassed though - you want to join them and they have an experienced candidate in you

Thanks Tilly. As always, good advice
. As much as I would like to change jobs, I am only applying for posts that I would really like to do and I feel that I have the skills and experience to do both. The organisations are both good and I know one of the organisations well, the other not so well.
