I have had a mixed time with the Co-Op.
It started badly and got worse, but on the plus side everything is now great.
I applied for the account, but never heard from the bank. I called them up and they approved the application. I was then asked to go to my local branch to show some ID. Somehow between applying and the branch, they had opened two bank accounts. They also conducted two rounds of credit checks.
It was the latter that I wasn't impressed with, so I complained to them. They arranged for the account to be closed and to remove the extra credit check. They also offered £75 for the inconvenience. I was very happy with this and accepted.
But they never removed the credit check. I called back to complain, but hit a brick wall. So I went to the Ombudsman. 9 months later and a extra £75 and the problem is finally sorted. Happy with the outcome in the end.
Plus if I didn't have the overdraft, I would have starved about 10 times along the year :-p0 -
NO trouble WHATsoever - fair credit rating. Applied on the Saturday online, got the account by Tuesday - NO hassle, no evidence required due to my answers all matching my credit history and just put the 300 in to activate the overdraft of which I got the FULL amount.
Highly recommend - took 10 minutes to set up mobile and online banking FAR better than my original bank of which I will be using for savings ONLY!!! Go onnnnn co opxx

My daughter has just managed to get a cooperative account for sept 2014.
1400 yr 1
1700 yr 2
2000 yr 3
need to put in 300 to start and kick in the account.
I don't know if there is any better options out there, but we thought this was one of the better ones overall ?0 -
Bit of an issue here.
Last month I tried to use my debit card and it wasn't accepted. Investigated a bit and it turns out my overdraft was removed from my account with no notice given (which I'm pretty sure is against the T&Cs...). Anyway I've probably broken some condition somewhere, but that kind of isn't the point.
Earlier this month I got a letter saying they were setting up an overdraft on my account. So I thought there was some kind of glitch somewhere and it was getting sorted.
Then last week I got a letter saying I needed to pay off my informal overdraft to avoid further charges...
I'll have the cash to pay it all off in a few days. Not sure what they've charged me yet but I'll be complaining.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -
my daughter just got full limit cooperative, needed to transfer i think £300 in first to kick start the overdarft off after opening.
so £1400 OD if required ist year, simple forms.:A0 -
Applied and was rejected by letter to my home address and not my term time address. Had to call to find out what was going on and they told me to check Experian, the same as Santander said also. Never did but NatWest says yes. I'll write that experience in the other thread for NatWest/RBS0

I applied for this account when I started my midwifery degree back in 2013. Applied right at the height of the Co-op bank director scandal hitting the news, and was accepted for the account literally within 20 mins.
It was dead easy to set up & I have phoned to up the overdraft at the start of each academic year. I have literally just transferred in money to bring the balance over £300, phoned to request the overdraft be increased & then removed the money again with no problems.
When I phoned last September for this, the nice lady on the phone said I had forgotten to call in year 2 (oops!) so she raised the overdraft straight from £1400 to £2000 for me :j
I've found them a really helpful bank, absolutely no problems, and they have a good little app to check my account & transfer money, etc. Plus it's important to me that they're ethical. A happy customer, I give them 10/100
