Buyer says cd player faulty

A buyer has paid for an old car cd player. he now says it is faulty and doesn't play all cd's. He also says (quite rudely) he doesn't want to pay postage to send it back, thinks he doesn't have to pay the original postage as well as the price.
As the player was not used for some time I had no way of checking it as I got rid of the car it was used in. As far as I can remember it was ok. My mother was the last to use it as I gave the car to her and she said it was fine.
Do I have to refund him the full amount (including postage) as well as let him keep it ? He is of course dangling the negative feedback over me
What if the buyer is trying it on ? Of course Ebay are always 100% behind the buyer.

Unless you sold it as broken or for parts then you will need to accept the return and pay postage both ways. This is not a case of ebay favouring the buyer, it is both common sense and UK law.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Imagine if you'd received an item that you had been told was working but wasn't - you'd probably feel a bit the same way.
You don't have any room to manoeuvre here, unfortunately. If in doubt, test it or list it as not working. I made that mistake once, it cost me £20, but I had no hesitation when refunding, and learned always to make sure everything was complete and working before listing."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

What if he is pretending it doesn't work just to get it free ? My mother says it was working fine when last in her car. Surely if it is faulty it won't be worth paying for postage to have it sent back ?0

If you haven't tested it before sending, then you an't be sure unless you get it returned. Something might have been damaged when it was taken out of the car.0 -

You have no idea whether it was working though- ye sit worked at some point. since then it has bene removed from a car and stored- what if it was damaged on removal, what if something has occured in storage.
Just refund , you have absolutely no way of knowing whether you sold it working or not.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. You have no idea if the item was still working when sent but you want to guess it was and make the buyer pay postage
It could have even been damaged in transit.0 -
The buyer now says it plays ok and he is happy to let the matter go and me keep the money.0
