Hello all & thanks for reading. I am unsure if my tax code is correct,I wanted to ask on here before I contact my tax office.
I work 22.5 hrs a week for the NHS, my part time salary/wage is £16575.00 per annum & my tax code is 220L. I am registered to be able to do agency work aswell, but have not done any of this. Does the 220L code mean I can earn £2,220 before tax?(sorry am not well up on this at all, hence my question!) I also have to launder uniforms etc, which I know I can claim tax relief on (I hav'nt claimed though) would this affect my tax code to? So many questions!!! Thanks again, advice much appreciated :) ps my tax code up until end of march this year was 773L, and I now seem to be paying around £100 extra tax each month??

It looks like the tax office have split your tax code between two jobs, did you contact them about the agency work? I would suggest that you contact the tax office advise you have had no earnings on agency and ask for you full allowance to go to your NHS job and a BR code for the agency work if you do any.

Yes it does, although £2205 normally used.

Yes but it would increase it.

The normal tax code is 810L for this tax year. Last tax year it was 747L so your tax code last year was more normal but you had some allowances on it.

220L is far too low if this is your only income. What does your P2 coding notice say about it?

Do you also have a tax code against your agency work and if so what is it?

EDIt - chrisbur replied whilst I was typing.
  • Thanks for your replies:) I am sorry but I dont even know what P2 is,am rubbish with this stuff!I have done no shifts with them but I have found a payslip from the induction days I did with them (which we got paid for) & it says my tax code is BR NONCUM? does this help? Thanks again:)

A P2 coding notice is the letter that comes from HMRC to explain why your tax code is 220L. Have you received such a letter?

Are you referring to the agency here? If so that is fine for the agency but you need to get your main code sorted out for the NHS.

Phone up HMRC asap and find out what's going on.
  • Ahh now I know re the P2, I have had those :o but I can't find the one I have had this year! Grrrrrr! I will ring HMRC then, the agency work I mentioned is another NHS hospitals trust staff bank ( not the Trust I work for in my 'proper' job), no shifts done though. Many thanks again Jem :)

BR would be perfect for the agency job so if HMRC have split your tax code, get them to unsplit it.

Whilst you're onto HMRC claim your uniform allowance, which assuming you are not paying back tax, should see a tax code above 810L attached to your main NHS work.
  • ok, does that mean you think I will owe tax then?? I have been paying more tax since april of this year by around £100/month.

No I don't. I'm just guessing at a possible reason for the low tax code of 220L as meaning a possible underpayment from a previous year having to be paid back.

If, as chrisbur suggests, your tax codes have been split this year, you are overpaying tax so far.
I have been paying more tax since april of this year by around £100/month.

If your tax code goes back to 810L plus, you will get that overpayment back once the new code is used.

Phone HMRC asap and find out.
  • Ok Jem16,will give them a ring now,cheers again.
