they are currently snowed under with abandoned cats and their vets bills are sky high and their food supplys very low......

thank you.

STORY IN LOCAL PAPER; (LINK ABOVE)..

The district’s stray cat problem has led to one sanctuary unable to take any more in as it owes thousands in vets bills.

Allerton Cat Rescue is now urging animal lovers to support them in any way possible to help re-open its centre so they can continue to provide a warm and safe place for unwanted cats until they are given a second chance.

The sanctuary has said this year has been one of the worst for the number of unwanted and abandoned animals which has severely affected the centre’s ability to function effectively.

Now it is desperately appealing for more volunteers to help fundraise.

Brenda Satterley, founder of Allerton Cat Rescue, said: “It has come to the point where we have had to close our doors to further cats in need due to a lack of funds.

“We currently have amassed a debt of £2,500 at Gatehouse Veterinary Surgery and the bill is only continuing to grow.

“Our food resources are running dangerously low and finding the money to replenish our stores is becoming increasingly more difficult.

“We cannot go on without financial support from our local community.”

Allerton Cat Rescue is not alone in being overrun with abandoned cats, as Bradford and District RSPCA said they too are experiencing a high demand.

Mandy Miller, animal centre manager, said: “We too are struggling to cope with the amount of cats coming through our doors, and we are also seeing a significant number of cats being abandoned at our centre.

“Last year we had 67 cats abandoned, and so far this year we have had 35 abandoned.”

Allerton Cat Rescue currently has around 60 cats in rescue and foster homes, and annually receives around 300 cats.

The sanctuary does have a small collection of loyal supporters who give a little whenever they are able, but they are appealing for more helpers.

One fundraiser, Daniel Danks, raised £180 from shoppers at Allerton and Heights Lane Co-op.

For more information on how you can help with fundraising or to volunteer your services contact Brenda on (01274) 481984, Allerton Cat Rescue, 258 Allerton Road, Allerton, BD15 7QX.

Have they got an ebay account where people can donate through paypal? Lots of charities have started doing that.

No offence to anyone involved but the website is not that good compared to some I have seen; not very user friendly.

I am in the same county and have been looking at cat rescue websites for a while but I had never even heard of this centre! Maybe that is their problem?

Best of luck with your fundraising - I have recently become a cat rescue fundraiser and fosterer and know some of the probelms you are facing

I would encourage anyone to take on an older cat from a shelter, as they have great personalities, their health problems have been checked out and mainly sorted, and we really don't mind that we didn't know them as kittens
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

The very huge majority of animals shelters are full, and will be for years to come, until selfish people who wont get their animals neutered actually do.

There should be a law to insist dogs/cats neutered unless people pay for a very expensive licence.

I have a very high level of hatred for people who deliberately breed.

I'd love a rescue cat but no rescue centre around my area will allow me to have one because I live on a road that they class as 'busy', and therefore think it must be dangerous. It is also a bus route and there's a school nearby which is also taken into account when I approach rescue centres, they simply won't let me have one.

My argument is that I could go out and buy a cat or move into the area with a cat rescued when living elsewhere and that cat could be fine and live a long and happy life.
There are several cats in the area and they just keep away from the road; I've never seen one cross it.

OneYorkshireLass, different rescues have different policies. Quiet country lanes are often a lot worse than busy main roads where there is constant noise and so the cats are not lulled into a false sense of security. There are lots of things to be taken into consideration with roads, are there gardens at the back, is it a mid terraced house etc.

If you look in any local free ads there are usually free to good home adult cats- in most cases these cats are on waiting lists for local rescues. Lots cant be kept because of landlords, kids allergies, or sometimes quite petty reasons. The cats are still desperately in need of a new good home.

ps forgotten how to change my profile- can anyone help me please?

    sorry i havent been on for a while and have just come across these comments - to answer your questions;

thegirlintheattic - they are indeed a no-kill shelter, unless they absolutely have to due to health reasons

themull1 - ive just had a look at some of the ebay posts for rescue centres and thanks for the head up - i will ask brenda (owner for allerton cat rescue) and then start doing this.....thanks.

    OneYorkshireLass - the link you found is for the bradfordcatrescue, which is an old page - the new page for allerton cat rescue is;

    https://www.facebook.com/pages/Allerton-Cat-Rescue-Bradford-Cat-Rescue/193148780767329

    https://twitter.com/AllertonCatResc

    allertoncatsanctuary@hotmail.co.uk

unfortunately, even though the centre has been going for years they arent as well known as others but, we are now working to remedy that and get our name out there better

blossomhill - thanks so much for your kind words - yes, most people prefer cute little kitties but dont realise how energetic they can be - the older cats get overlooked so it is really nice when we see them getting rehomed - our oldest resident who had been there years has recently just got a home which is a really happy occasion for us.

moggymutt - i totally agree with you, too many selfish people just dont bother getting their animals 'done' and thus allow them to have offspring after offspring adding to the problem of all these unwanted babies needing homes.

OneYorkshireLass - have you thought of asking if they would let you have a cat if you kept it as an indoor cat? Im not sure what brenda's position is on busy roads but as far as i know it doesnt stop her as long as the cat is getting a loving home. I will find out for you if you want?

    .................

Ive just come back from a day spent bagpacking at a local supermarket and hopefully we raised a nice sum - my feet and back are aching but its well worth it......... thanks everyone. please visit our twitter and facebook pages to see the good work we do....
