eBay -item returned in worse condition

hi would just like some advice please

i sold an old laptop on ebay, only problem was the bulb in the screen had gone. buyer opened a "not as described" case against me stating it wouldn't start up and was dead, they won. just recieved the laptop back and the keyboard pad is off, the screen hasn't been put on right as it has a gap, i plugged my HDMI cable in and it loaded up but "BOOTNGR" is missing and what it wants me to press i obvously can't, they also small bits of paper stuck in places

do i have a case?

Yes - you probably do have a case for an appeal against any dispute.

Report the buyer for claim abuse. They won't get any money taken back but eBay will reimburse you and hopefully hammer the buyer.

Is it the same laptop returned ? I strongly suspect they have cannibalised your one and returned one made from parts from 2 duff machines, keeping a working one.

From the OP's description of the returned laptop, this sounds very likely.

Or perhaps they attempted a fix, and royally screwed it up, causing even more damage in the process.

Either way it sounds like it's been taken apart, who knows what's been swapped out/damaged further.

Yes - the procedure in any event would be the same (although in the situation where it was a different item returned legal action would also be appropriate - here I'm not so sure but you will probably win the appeal through eBay and get the money back for it). If the damage had been caused in the post then it would be different, but this is what eBay's new systems in October are designed for. I do hope they sort out the obvious problems in the system while keeping the dispute procedure robust enough to protect genuine buyers.

Don't give up - fight this down to the wire. If it fails, you still might have legal redress against the buyer, but I'm not in a position to offer more guidance on that score.
