Any electricians here? Power outages with a kitchen socket

About an hour ago, I decided to make a toastie sandwich using the toastie bags to put them into my toaster. I put the toaster on and within 10 seconds, the bag popped up and noticed that the microwave and stereo clocks were switched off as well.

The power was working normal in my bedrooms. This has happened before where I have been out and had a power cut to half the property. Phoned the central networks and they said there was no outage in my area and told me to switch off all of the circuit board and put them back on again. Power came back on. Decided to make the toast again - the same electrical things went down. They told me its either the toaster or the plug. I have tried another electrical item the other socket of the double socket and the power went down. Moved the toaster and plugged it into another double socket on the other side of the kitchen. Again the power went down. Yet, the microwave, which is plugged into the latter of the double sockets works as cooked a packet of microwave rice.

I suspect its both the socket and the toaster that played up. My flat is 3 years old and the toaster is 2 years old.

Does anyone know how much it will cost to repair the socket?

  • Middy,
It sounds as if there is a circuit breaker on the part of your wiring where you plug the toaster in. If the toaster is faulty, it will trip the circuit breaker and the power goes down on that circuit - commonly only part of the house and often not lighting.

If there is power in part of your house it definitely is not the supplier or a power cut.

I think the socket is fine, but the toaster is faulty and the circuit breaker is doing it's job.

If everything else works in the socket, it's almost certain your toaster is faulty - time to throw it away - unless it's an expensive model :)

    Hope this helps.

Toaster only cost me about £17-20. Rather pay that again for a new toaster than 10-15 times as much for a sparky!
  • The socket is probably badly wired... I've seen a few bodge jobs in my time some even wired to the lighting circuit! No wonder they blew the fuse...

Just checking - why the other socket? Was the toaster still plugged in too?

Try the toaster in a different room / floor. If it still trips, sling it or get it fixed.

Now try your other appliance in all the kitchen sockets. If it's OK, happy days, if it trips, there may be a problem with your kitchen ring (or really unlucky and have two dodgy applicances). No point your testing any further because I'd guess from your posts you wouldn't be confident rectifying or changing accessories yourself. I'd guess an electrician's bill if it's straight forward would be somewhere between minimum call out and £100.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

No, someone who can't be arsed to return to threads that they start.
