Canceled Direct Debit - Receive Refunds?

Hi,
Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this.
I've got a simple question.
If I've cancelled a direct debit from a company can they still send me refunds electronically to my bank account without me contacting them? I've searched online and I can't find any guidance on this.
Regards,
Angus

Yes, assuming they have retained your bank details.0

Excellent news. I cancelled the direct debit at my banks end NOT on the virgin media website.
They are trying to take £42 for me as an early contract termination fee... however my contract was for 9 months not 12.
Several phonecalls had confirmed this both at the start of the contract and at the end when I cancelled it. Fortunately I'd kept a full record of the times, dates and people I'd spoken to about everything. For some reason Virgin have decided to give me £21 instead of charging me £42 after I abused them down the phone.
The call went something like this:
"Why are you trying to charge me £42 when my contract has expired and I've cancelled the account and paid off my outstanding dues in full"
"you have a 12 month contract and there is a early termination fee"
"my contract was for 9 months"
"verbal contract is for 12 months sorry there is nothing we can do"
"obviously you can't help me, please put me through to someone who has the power to sort this out for me"
"sir there is no one who can help you, the contract is for 12 months. I'm afraid there is nothing I can do"
"well the contract I agreed verbally on dd/mm/yyyy with XXX at 13:21PM was for 9 months. I'm not paying a penny more, I've paid you what I'm due in full. I want you to cancel this charge and put a note on my account saying it's been dealt with and that you won't bother me again or charge me this money."
"okay sir we are going to give you £21 and I've put the note on the account for you."
....Criminals![/rant]
Basically if they want to send me £21 I am more than happy but I've cancelled the direct debit to ensure that they don't steal the £42 from me. I'm really not convinced they aren't going to still try and take it.0 -
I'd put your side in writing in order to create a paper trail. Should they take more than is due don't forget the Direct Debit Guarantee, although with cancellation of the mandate that shouldn't happen.0
