eBay is going to be the best place to sell it - the fees pay for the advertising, so you could say that other venues wouldn't fetch you a similar price because of limited funds for the website to promote your listing, rather than sharing the cost with thousands of other people and actually making a good return on what you are selling.
If it's not worth what you're asking for it, it's not worth it. Scammers can bid high because they won't have to fork out the actual cash. Therefore if you are only attracting them, your price is too high - full stop.
As you say, if it's uneconomical to sell it, then don't bother. As long as it doesn't end with a winning bidder who has paid, you are not being forced to sell it. But the reality is - eBay is the best place to get a good return, and the fees pay for that because of the need to advertise on TV and build the brand. You just don't get anything for nothing.
You are between a rock and a hard place, so the best option is just not to bother."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4
