Undercharged in store

We had a family day out yesterday, we went into a well know bear store and I paid using my card. However, we got home to a message on the answermachine from someone at the store saying they had undercharged me, and need me to phone back and pay with my card over the phone. I've checked the bank, and defintely there was an undercharge, which it appears they tried to rectify, although the money was taken back by the bank. It didn't even cross my mind that the amount owed and charged would be so different, and I'm not sure what to do. We live a long way from the store and I wasn't planning on going to that area again so soon, but I'm not happy about the idea of paying over the phone.
Any advice please, what are my rights?

    Send them a cheque.

If your receipt said one price and you paid less than that then you owe them the money.

If you receipt just says the price you have paid then you probably don't owe them the money.

Why are you not happy about paying over the phone ? Seems to me to be the best solution.

No rights, really. You owe them the balance (which you acknowledge in your OP). Retailer has 6 years to chase you for this outstanding amount, if you choose to ignore the request, and any subsequent court costs (if it went that far) would be charged to you too.

I think you'll just need to call the store, although maybe try to first find whether the number they have given corresponds with the store itself before calling?

Edit: or like goater suggests, send them a cheque. Call them first to advise them that this is what you are doing. And write on the back of the cheque a reference to the original transaction so that they can be tied together.

Thanks, I've just phoned them (after checking the number online) and paid the outstanding amount.
    Thanks again.

Op - was the price on your receipt the higher correct amount or the amount you paid?
    What was the difference?

How did they get your phone number? That's quite concerning.

Often when you pay by card, they ask for your address and postcode, for marketing purposes, telephone number is easily found from that unless it's ex directory of course.

Really? I'm guessing this is specific to the company in the OP as I've never heard of any retailer going to that extreme with a customer making a purchase from them. Not to mention the fact they keep enough card details available to staff instore so they can attempt to recover the undercharge without the customer present as they did to the OP. Standard for retail these days is to have all but the last 4 digits starred out on the retailers instore copy.

If you paid the amout shown on the receipt then you don't have to pay as contract in concluded.
