car insurance cancelation charge.

hi im new here and was looking for some advice.
i did a car insurance search and found a cheap one, so went through the website and purchased. paid the deposit and thought great i'm insured. next i receive an email from them saying i need to ring them to activate the policy. upon phoning we went through the details and he changed some things to do with car security. i have a ford so it comes with manufacturer fitted security. but he said it was thatcham 2 security. and also my previous insurance installed a tracker in my car. i put this tracker in my original quote as unspecified. its not a lie the car has got a tracker on but i don't know enough about this stuff to say its version xxx blah blah. any way apparently this isnt a valid tracker so he removed it. i'm fine with that. my mistake. but when he then announced the price as an extra £1000 on top of what i already had been quoted i thought no. ill look else where. so this is the bit thats really got me P**d off. i said cancel it and return my deposit. bearing in mind the email i received states i need to ring to activate the policy. so in my mind i dont currently hold any insurance with them. they want to charge me to cancel a non active policy. all this happened in the space of 12 hours from me clicking accept. is this reasonable or should i pursue my full money back. i know insurance have charges for stuff but it dont make any sense. they havnt activated anything but want paying.

sorry for the wall of words. i hate insurance companies at best and this has made me furious.

all the best
rene

Yeah the tracker would probably only apply if you subscribe to a service where you can report it stolen and find out where it is. Ot if the police can do that.

This is the issue with some of the cheaper companies on the comparison websites. They got your attention, Now they just need to make an extra few ££ from you if possible.

When you purchased it i presume you set the start date, So in theory you were covered and the policy would have been in force if you needed to claim.

So they will charge a cancellation fee and charge for time on cover. Which maybe more than you think reasonable.

Did they give you a figure?

It is always imperative to ensure cover is right BEFORE you buy otherwise you are liable for cancellation charges.

You say you dont know what you have in which case you should call and check with the insurer to confirm with them what they would mark it as.

If you didnt pay for a "for life" tracker then it is subscription based and unless you are paying a subscription still then the device is dead and so of no benefit to your insurance.
