How am I going to do this?

I'm being made redundant on the 11th May, I have decided to relocate to my home town as my current landlord wants to refurbish this place at the end of my tenancy anyway.

The problem is I won't have a job when looking for a place to rent, I plan on looking for one but with so many things to do I am getting stressed out by it all and have even been signed off work this week with stress.

So my question is how an earth do I find somewhere to live without a job?

At the end of May I will have some redundancy money (only £620) and some notice money but not enough to come up with 6 months rent as I need this money to live on until I get a new job.

I'm planning on going bankrupt in June once I have somewhere to live so that's something else playing on my mind. :(

if your going to petition for bankruptcy you must have serious financial problems, assuming with these problems you can't afford to live without an income you'll be claiming benifits, i'd say the council was your best befor a property.

if you want to rent and not via the council a private rent sometimes doesnt ask for employer referneces check out your local papers/gumtree etc.

but it sounds like you have enough cash for a months deposit and a months rent, if you get a job, and it has lying time for wages, it looks like you won't be able to pay your 2nd months rent...
Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

As it's your home town, is it out of the question to move in with friends or family temporarily?

I know how it looks, I have been stressing over this for a couple of weeks. I was meant to be moving in with my boyfriend, so there would have been some breathing space to find a job, and the rent etc.. would be halved. But we're not getting on at the moment and I need to do what is best for me, ie. getting somewhere on my own.

Unfortunately I don't have many friends in the area so won't be able to stay with them and my Dad won't let me stay with him, last time I needed somewhere quickly when my Mum sold her flat I was living in my Dad paid 6 months rent on a house for me so I didn't move in with him. He can't afford to do that again, and I don't think I would even be able to ask... I also have a cat which means I need to make sure it's ok for him, so sharing probably wouldn't be ideal.

I'll check out gumtree though, and my Dad sent me the local paper today to have a look at the places to rent. There seem to be a few, although it's probably a bit early to be looking.
  • Your dad seems helpfull maybe ask him to be a guarantor, which means he would be responsible for the payment if you defaulted. now if your already thinking of defaulting or would be unable to pay the rent due to a change in circumstances then dont ask, or explain your situation to him as he probably is not aware.

I don't plan on defaulting on the rent, I just want to wait until I move to look for a job... I will temp (which I have done before) or even work on the checkouts at Tesco to bring in some money, I don't want to be on benefits at all, but to start off with I don't think I have much choice.

I could ask my Dad to be guarantor, it's his partner who tends to make the decisions and I just feel it will put pressure on the relationship between them and possibly between them and me. It's definately an idea though, but I think as a last possible resort.

Thanks for the advice, it is making me realise what I need to do... I'm going to email some places now for work, if I can get a job before I move this would be so much easier, I was just hoping to reduce my stress levels a bit.
