Canaries in Feb - any recommendations?

Hi there

I am thinking of booking a family holiday to Lanzarote in Feb 2013. I can only travel the week commencing the 9th and can only do one week. I need a sunshine holiday for two adults and two kids. Ideally it will be a busyish hotel with evening entertainment for the kids etc, but I don't really know if this is possible in Feb.

I need to do it as cheaply as possible, but am not sure if that is likely to mean going all inclusive, or going self catering but paying less for flights/hotel etc. Some seem to have good deals on half board, which could be an option, but I like the idea of not having to pay for snacks/ice cream/drinks while there and think paying for these could really rack up the costs.

Any advice or recommendations on packages/hotels/tour operators etc would be very welcome, as I haven't a clue where to start!

Ideal budget less than £1500 all in!

Thomson/First Choice are very good for the Canaries, as are https://www.lowcostholidays.com
  • This April, we went to the Cordial Mogan Valle hotel in Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria. It was a very picturesque resort, very family orientated, no blaring bars or nightclubs. We go to Canaries most years, and have done all the islands. It was our first time at this resort and hotel, and we will definately go again in future. See trip advisor for comments, hotel and resort get a great write up. ( We are couple in our 50s )

Well I hate to disagree , or the timing is everything , but we are a couple also in our 50's , went on an evening trip to Puerto Rico in July.

It was ghastly ,could find nothing about the place I liked.

I went with Thomson to the Canaries last month , travel plans were great no complaints.

Have to agree with you here. We went to Puerto Rico in 2008 and it has put us off going back to Gran Canaria. Whilst the sun was hot and I came away with the best tan ever it didn't fill me with wonderful holiday memories. The resort is really hilly, we struggled pushing a pushchair up the hill night and day which meant we had to get taxis from out hotel down the hill and back several times a day. It's a very toursity resort, in that it's geared for the Brits. If you want a home from home you'll be fine here. Very difficult to find any typical Spanish/ Canarian cuisine, but if it's British bar food or cooked breakfasts your after you'll do fine here. Entertainment can be found in it's plenty, in big purpose filled concrete entertainment centres, along with the British food and British beer. Heading down to the beach is a lengthy process, 1 because of the walk down the hill and 2 because you're trying to dodge all the time share sellers of which there are many who stop you on the way. We like to be out and about exploring but found it difficult to travel around the island and very little places to visit in the area. The only place I would stay in if I had to go back would be Puerto Morgan, which again is a purpose built resort but it's been designed in a typical Spanish way and encompasses the spanish cuisine and taste.

If you want Blackpool in the sun then go here, but if you want culture stay on the mainland (we stayed in Malaga in March and it was a pleasant 26 degrees).
  • Thanks for all replies. I have decided (after a little digging) to try to find somewhere in Lanzarote, as the weather appears optimal there compared with other Canary Islands in Feb. Having said that, I have found the following quote and would welcome any thoughts on any aspect - e.g. price/place etc - before I commit to booking it:

    I have this quote:

Hotel Cay Beach – Playa Blanca, Lanzarote (travelling from Manchester)
    9th Feb 13 – 16th Feb 13 (7 nights)
    All inclusive
Flights, hotel, transfers included for two adults and two children
    LowCostHolidays have quoted £1400.00

    Thanks again!

i have been to tenerife/gran canaria/lanzarote/fuerteventura several times to each between december and march, out of all of them lanzarote has always been the windiest which is not so much of a problem during the day but can get quite nippy on a night. gran canaria has always been the best weather we stay at playa del ingles, its quite a hike to the beach but hotel we stay does provide a coach.
we tend to stay in riu hotels they always have entertainment on a night for both children and adults, but i am sure most other hotels will do the same

just re re read your post, playa blanca is the warmest of the resorts i believe and less windier i have been told, we always stay playa del poccolis

Sounds like a reasonable price to me. I've visited that area but never stayed there, seemed nice enough to me, but I was only there for about half a day.
