Tax Credits Finalisation - Check notice carefully

Just a bit of a rant really....
I finalised my tax credit claim by phone in July (we no longer qualify due to the reduced limits and a slight increase in OHs wages).
Gave the figures from our P60s, which showed we were about £185 over the estimate we gave at the start of the year (having updated all the small payrises etc as they happened over the year).
Got the final paperwork through today and was horrified to see they wanted us to repay almost £4k .
Now, I don't find their paperwork very well set out or easy to understand but I finally worked out that they had put our joint income for the year down as MY income (that would be nice in real life, as I only earn £15.5k), and then ADDED my partners income from 2010/11 to the total. When I realised they thought we earnt over £52k over the year it made sense that they asked for their money back!!!
Of course, I called straight away (and followed up with a letter to confirm our discussion) and they were very good until, at the end of the call, the lad said 'would you like me to transfer you to Collections now to discuss the overpayment ?' Err, no thank you, I'd rather wait until you finalise my award on the correct figures and tell me whether or not I owe you anything first!
Although I was very polite, I really don't think the poor lad knew what to do with me, and I felt quite bad for him. Let's hope the renewed figures come out a little bit better lol.
