I'm a great fan of external CD drive cases. I've got one I bought from Amazon for a few pounds which does IDE or SATA drives. I've been decomissioning a few old PCs and it has been extremely useful for accessing various old hard drives, reformatting etc.
One of these cases would let you reformat the drive from your laptop.
Another alternative would be to buy a replacement drive from e-bay. Something similar might be only a few pounds.0
