Weclearjunk Problem

Hi all,

I'm currently renovating my house, and I need some advice regarding a rubbish clearance company called Weclearjunk. Basically, we've used them to remove a whole house worth of plaster and lath. When we spoke to them on the phone, we were told that they charge approx £300 to remove two skips worth, and that they might need to make two trips, so we were expecting a bill in the region of £700. In the event, they made four visits, and charged by weight, not skipload as advertised on their website. They worked rather slowly turning up hours late and on one occassion spending 20 mins out of the 90 cutting deals with two other builders on my street. In response, we made them stay behind to finish up for an additional 30 mins. They've now charged us £400 overtime, making the overall cost about £1700. We've told them the bill is unacceptable, and waiting for their comeback. At present, we've paid them £700, which is about what I would have expected based on my initial conversation. We're complete novices, but I know that we're being ripped off here. I wonder if anyone can advise me on how to fight them? We never had a written contract with them, which cuts both ways I suppose!

Many thanks!

You should have got a fixed price before they started.

I would be tempted to give them the £700 in full and final settlement and let them take you to court if they feel they have a case. I'd be surprised if hey do!

Thanks Phil, I'm thinking the same thing. That's one lesson I've learnt - rubbish clearance companies can be really shady, and that one should always get a written quote. Will report back on our progress. In the meantime I'm going to find some websites to write horrible reviews about weclearjunk on!
