A contract term that allows someone to cease supplying the service without any form of refund would almost certainly be considered unfair and therefore unenforceable
£20 a year isn't a great deal of money, and I wouldn't be surprised to find that if the OP was to push for a partial refund the company concerned would claim that the cost of setting up the account and allowing it to operate for the past 6 months would have used all of the £20.
It might have been the "norm", but openly calling a football manager a cheat on a public forum could lead to the website operators getting action taken against them.xxx manager is a dirty cheating xxxx etc was the norm.0 -

I don't see anyone winning refunds in Court from nightclubs when they have paid to enter, cause an incident and get ejected. The man without a signature.0 -

I suspect this is the bit they're jumpy about - xxx manager might be all those things...however if you say so, and he threatens to take the site to court for defamation/libel, it'll cost more to defend than the £20 membership fee. They probably want a quiet life, it's easier to boot you than fight or even deal with his lawyers.0 -
I think they would find it hard to persuade a judge the term regarding suspension is not unfair.
The other term regarding the ability to post articles doesn't allow then to suspend the account.
I cannot see what grounds they have to deny the service and refuse a refund. Like you op I'd be demanding a pro-rata refund.0 -

I don't see anybody testing this in court either.
If you was ejected from a night club without reason or with poor excuse I fail to see why you wouldn't be awarded a refund.0 -
Is it a poor excuse? The website is trying to run a game and I can see why they don't want subscribers calling other subscribers swear words.
I am assuming by the phrasing he dropped the c bomb. I think he's rightly been banned and I don't see why he should get a refund. I would be surprised if any court thought this was unfairThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I do have some sympathy, but abusive language and you lose membership is the norm.
Should the person be entitled to a refund? No because they subscribed and therefore in a contract.
I suppose the real thing to do is to ask for rights to view only, and loose the right to publish.0 -
football is all about the c word. Ask John the C Terry.0
