Best place to sell photographs

A friend of mine has a collection of excellent photos that he has taken himself and he was wondering where would be the best place to try to sell them? Also do people sell them just as prints or do they need to get the photos framed/canvassed first etc...?

I think the problem is that everyone nowadays has a decent camera and fancies themselves as a bit of a photographer. I have seen some absolutely exceptional photos taken by amateurs which I have envied, but would I pay for them?- no I wouldn't as I can't think of any real use for them

I buy art and mixed items from auctions and quite often a large box of framed photos will be sold for £5, the first thing the dealer buying them does is to chuck the photos away and flog on the frames if they are any good.

The only time I think private photos would sell is if your friend lived somewhere interesting, maybe a famous beach resort or area of outstanding beauty. He might then be able to liaise with a local gift shop to sell limited edition copies of his prints as souvenirs, but at souvenir prices.

He could always try photos on eBay at 99p a go see if there is any interest. Buying decent stiff backed envelopes that are standard letter size would make postage cheap, so they could chaRge say 70p for 2nd class post to include the cost of the envelope. He might only make a few pence but it is a place to start.

Are they digital? If so, the absolute best place for them would be an online stock photo site. I favour Shutterstock and iStockphoto, but there's loads out there. If they're not, then perhaps Etsy might be a good route to go down.

He travels a lot so it's mostly landscape scenery type of things. My favourites are those he takes of people. Brilliant detail. I have a nice camera too but I can't seem to do as great of a job as him.

I'm quite jealous to be honest hehe.

Lol, this made me crack up. Do people seriously ever get away with that?

As for me, I wouldn't want an ebay business. Just selling my own things makes me stress out like crazy.

He could contact an agency that sells photos as long as he owns the copyright(his own photos in other words). They put the photos up for sale and he would get a cut. No idea how much they pay or whether its financially worth it but would be worth an email to check.

    Agencies like Getty, Wireimage etc.
