TEAM GB What about NI?
Comments
-
I have watched the last 12 Olympics and it was never Team GB before.
Further explanation here: -
Great Britain is the team that sends athletes from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) plus the three Crown dependencies and all but three of the British overseas territories, to the Olympic Games. It is organised by the British Olympic Association (BOA) as the National Olympic Committee for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. While the BOA and the overall games organizers the International Olympic Committee (IOC) both refer to the team as Great Britain, allocating them the IOC country code GBR, the BOA also currently uses the brand name Team GB for the team, explaining that Team GB is the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team.0 -
Now let me see....did anyone see where BargainGalore's posts went too...?Dave0

Well, it is 'Team GB' this time around.
To go back to your original post that started the thread:Not happy with Martin and the Forum. Banner at top of forum page has "Come on Team GB." It is Team GB & NI!
No NAR, it is not 'Team GB & NI'. Martin is quite correct with his banner.
and then again:On the BBC only the athletic commentators consistently call the team by the correct name ie Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Wrong again, NAR. The correct name of the team is 'Team GB'.
What is so difficult about taking that on board? :huh:Further explanation here: -

Yes, we know that Team GB also represents Northern Ireland plus places like the Isle of Man and various other territories. No-one has said that it doesn't.0 -
I always thought that Great Britain was only a geographical area, not a country. It is the mainland section of the British Isles that includes England, Scotland and Wales. It doesn't include Northern Ireland. It would be correct for me to say I was British but my country is the United Kingdom.
As a previous poster has said, Team GB is just a brand name.0 -
It is just a brand name, dreamed up by an English PR Company, who no doubt got paid a fortune to come up with the name.As a previous poster has said, Team GB is just a brand name.
Just because it is Team GB this time around doesn't make it right or acceptable. Even our MLA's en bloc (for a change) protested several months ago at the name.0 -
Come on guys, this is a big fuss about nothing. The basic problem is that your average UK individual actually doesn't realise there is a point to be made. I know a significant number of those on the mainland who, before they were set straight, were uncertain about whether NI uses the euro and if they needed travel adaptors to make their phone chargers work when they got here. Mix that into the internet and online shopping etc. and we have free shipping which isn't free shipping, we have people who think it is a different country, people who think NI is in GB, people who think NI is part of Ireland...
To me, this whole mess just shows that home geography is something which is taught totally inadequately at schools.Always overestimating...0 -
I was amazed the other night when Gabby Logan mentioned the three rowers from Coleraine who won medals, she did not say they were from "Coleraine in Northern Ireland", but just from "Coleraine" is if she was saying they were from Reading or Maidstone. The piece went on for a few minutes and she did not mention that Coleraine was in Northern Ireland once. Great work.
respect to Gabby.0 -
Yes respect to Gabby, who probably does know where Coleraine is located. Any decent TV pundit will do their own research.
However how many of the GB (
)listeners knew where she was talking about? My wife is from England and quite often has asked me about locations of towns in England, never mind here, demonstrating the very poor teaching of England/British Isles geography being provided over there. 0
