Uni assignment? Need to select a company?

Options
Hi all.

I've a uni assignment where I have to select a company(FTSE100 during 2006) and to statistally analyse the effect on share price for two events( During 2006). These events hopefully have to be significant and hopefully reduce the share price. I have basically no knowledge of the FTSE 100 for the year 2006 (These are the requirements for the company data).

I'm hoping people on here will be able to suggest some companies and more importantly the event. I'll then be able to trace the event to a time and anayle the price at that time. I've looked for data on BP after it was suggested however I can't find any key events for that year although I've been going around in circles looking for news on a particular date. The key events such as the texax blast and the Thunder Horse platform listing seem to have occured in 2005.

I hope you can give me some suggestions for companies especially where I can track the event to a specific date.

Thanks

Partygaming could be a good example. It dropped out of the FTSE100 into the 250 because of the US online gambling ban last year. It had £2 billion wiped off the value of its shares. It did rally later on takeover speculation.

  • try something like the airline industry eg British airways try the following link
http://www.britishairways.com/travel/bapress/public/en_gb and look at press release in 2006
    or Ryanair on http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/news.php?sect=SEARCH

    impact of security restrictions july/august?

I finished a degree in business mgmt last year and know what it feels like worrying if the company/industry area you've picked will give you enough info or lead you down a blind alley

I have no real knowledge on the FTSE 100 and finance but Boots springs to mind... it mergerd with Alliance Pharmacy in 2006. If you can include 2007 it had a takeover bid the other week which sent shares upwards.

    Good luck.

British Airways is a good example, its one i'd choose - as an airline its exposed to many factors such as volative currency excahnges rates (eg £/$), things like SARS and bird flu, wars, terrorism, its staff striking, its catering company nearly going bust, illegal price-fixing of ticekts by some its directors, air traffic control problems, adverse weather.... need i go on! All of which have effected its share price quite drastically.

BA shares hit rock bottom in 2001 after 9/11 in the US, of about 93p I think. So much so, it even dropped out of the FTSE100 for a peroid. But they have been climbing back up over the years and are now around £5. Lots of events in 2006 for this one too.

Marks and Spencer had quite a colourful year in 2006 too.
  • Thanks for the replies.

I think I'm going to use BA. The events I'm going to use are the investigation by the OFT and DOJ for running a cartel and the pension deficit of £100m. I was also thinking about using the ex-dividend date but I cant't find it.

Hopefully you can help me find the ex-dividend date (during 2006)?

    Thanks
