No speaking from experience we had the same problem local electrician explained that it takes about 10 mins for the smell to be noticed which is caused by overheating of cable in pull switch.Which in turn is normally because 12/15kw shower is installed but the cable is only 6mm instead of 10mm
The op should get it checked out

A simple google "shower cable overheating" should provide some answers

No you didn't have the same problem. You had a similar smell which could have been caused by by a number of components. the op's husband has replaced the switch which has solved the problem. if the cable is overheating in the switch this is more than likely caused by a bad or loose connection, and not because of the cable rating.

FWIW - easiest pull switch for 10mm is crabtree 50a http://www.screwfix.com/p/crabtree-50a-pullcord-sw-neon/90597

oh - and loose connection on either L or N for OP gets a +1 as reason.

Thanks but I truly wish my sons only spent 10 mins or less in the shower!

The toilet was redone about 5yrs ago and the cable put in was the correct cable for the shower fitted, which was the most powerful at that time. It was not a cowboy fitter or my OH!! But OH can deal with the simple replacement of things!

When my husband removed the switch it was easy to see where something had been overheating! Most definately the switch and yes we have had to replace the switch several times for various reasons! The shower is used at least twice a day but more like 4 times daily. so it takes a lot of use and abuse.

Its good to know for the future should it re-occur! The switch does not take much changing.

If you have changed the switch for the shower several times I would get a electrician in too inspect the wiring as they shouldn't fail that often.
