Virginmedia's smtp.ntlworld.com server acting flakey?

Is there anyone else with virginmedia but an ntlworld.com address having trouble sending emails from the mail client(I am using thunderbird)?
Since yesterday there has been periods where smtp.ntlworld.com has timed out failing o connect and not sent out emails. It is intermittant but it seems to me that their server is starting to fall over quite often.
There is nothing reported in the server status and their phone support seem to think I need to increase my timeout( unlikely as it has not failed due to smtp timeouts before). I am not having any problems receiving pop emails.
I am just wondering if it is me experiencing these difficulties.

I've been having similar problems - receiving emails OK but I can't send or forward any. Been like this since last night. Looking on the Virgin forum looks like they are trying to disable all email addresses ending in ntlworld.com, so maybe we are on the 'hit list' and this is a way of trying to get rid of us!

This is the feeling I am increasingly getting. Changing to smtp.virginmedia.com appears to be a workaround that we may have to accept permanently. I have no problem doing this but I just wish VM would inform us about this(if smtp.ntlworld.com is going to be retired that is)
  • so long as i only have to change my outgoing server and not my trusty old ntlworld.com address then its fine.
I have tried smtp.virginmedia.com but still can't send email!

    Grrrr

As long as you change the SMTP server to smtp.virginmedia.com your NTLWorld emails will send ok, leave the other port settings as they are. You wont have to change your email address from NTLWorld to Virginmedia. They are obviously testing or slowly migrating their SMTP server over to the new one. The Virginmedia SMTP server will allow NTLWORLD emails to pass through it as this domain belongs to them. Sorry for being geeky.
