hi all.
i have just purchased an old bungalow with storage heaters and no gas. i was wondering if anyone had any advice on the most cost effective way of getting heating and hot water.
i have been looking at solar panels, back boilers and the like but would like to hear of peoples experiences.
i am quite happy to install radiators.

Is it possible to get a mains gas supply to the property? That will be the most economic way, although obviously a high upfront cost.
Without gas, storage heaters are the most economic, if not the most effective method of heating. But any form of electric heating will be 2-3 times as much as mains gas.
If mains gas in not possible, look at oil CH.
Solar panels can't heat or light a property.

    Agree with the above!

The best solution depends to a certain extent on your lifestyle. IE in all day or out at work.

Installing any form of heating will cost several thousand pounds and it will take a long while to recoup that expenditure even if running costs are less.

Check out under floor heating, which operate at lower temperatures, in combination with heat pumps (air or ground source). This is assuming no mains gas.
  • there is no mains gas in the road. most people have gas tanks in their gardens, dont really want to go down that road!
thanks for the info, will look into in more detail.
  • Also, have just found out i can get permission for an extension and loft conversion, could look at incorporating new heating in with the build.
which would be the best route to take?
