Roof Cleaning...

My FIL has just had his roof cleaned. It's a fairly large roof as it's a 5 bed house with double garage. It was pressure washed, then had some sort of fungal stuff put on, then sealed and then I think it had a coloured paint put onto the tiles ....
This cost them £6,000 - it was going to be £8,000 but they reduced the cost if they could put an advertising board up.
I'm worried they have been taken for a ride as I keep reading how this is all completely unnecessary....??
Anyone out there with any opinions on a reasonable cost?
I've since heard the company returned with the hard sell for other services which he luckily decined after a few hours of saying NO....

Why would it matter if you're roof was dirty ?
I've seen this done on Watchdog type programmes and any pressure washing could force tiles loose, or at the very least the water from the washer can get into the loft.
I think they've paid more than a new roof may have cost.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

It had moss on it, which they were told was causing problems......0

You can get a new roof for not much more. I really dont see point in paying that much for a roof clean. Moss is usually isnt a problem just unsightly. You can get copper on roofs that will kill moss
I think they have listened to too much salesman spiel and lies sorry but I think they paid way over odds.0 -
Blimey, how much! Sounds a bit too much to me. I would want mine cleaned all year for that price.0

Have they been taken for a ride? Oh yes. Big time with knobs on. Why do ou need to clean your roof? Roofs get dirty. That means they are doing their job.
What is a reasonable cost? £zero, as it is completely unnecessary.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
I really feel you need to contact the Trading Standards Department to register a complaint and make them aware that a roof cleaning gang are working the area, although I would imagine they may be well aware. In these type of cases TS need as much evidence as possible so please do contact them.SallyD0

My parents in Colchester paid for exactly the same thing about 3 years ago. I was convinved that it was a con and made them report it to Trading Standards. To my (and their) horror about 6 months after they had parted with all this money there was a piece on Watchdog about this. I don't know for sure that it was the same company but it seems quite likely.
I hate this preying on the trusting elderly-- If I had known what they were doing BEFORE they had handed over the cash I would have intervened but we were overseas at the time and only found out afterwards.
You must get it reported to try and stop the scam. Good thing they resisted the follow up--mine did too.0 -
Sorry to hear about that.
Just always remember.
1. You never ever jet wash tiled roofs.
2. You never ever paint them.
That stupid underside insulation coating is a huge con as well.:(0 -
As mentioned already - speak with Trading Standards, cold calling attracts a 7 day cool off period.0

Had our equally big house pressure washed for about £600.
I know everyone says not to do it but it was awful and has come up very nice. All tiles intact. Was done over a year ago and still OK.
roof tiles are cheap and for 6k I would have been looking for a new install.
I cannot believe people will just accept a quote for that much money without doing a bit of research. A few minutes on the web would have had those guys rumbled.0
