Complicated, Electoral Roll

OK bit complex, basically my OH lived in N.I. For 20 years, 10 years at the one address. Obviously he was on the Electoral Roll there. In mid April we moved into a rented house in England, but kept the N.I. House and rented it out. He's not yet changed to the roll here. Is it better to NOT change to the roll here, as it won't go through until the beginning of September and he'll be applying for the mortgage soon, or change it as obviously all his banking is now registered here?

Sorry if it's an obvious answer, my head is spinning a bit!

I do not agree with above, banks hate inconsistency.

From a credit scoring perspective it would already have linked the addresses just not officially, so best to change.

On a superficial note, any Experian/Equifax automated scores may drop but these are irrelevant and therefore lenders would prefer integrity.

Do change it over and ensure any application includes his previous address accurately and a broker/adviser are not lazy..

    All the best

It's largely going to depend on the lender though. Some of the High Street banks will want this but others won't.

I agree with your point re. the integrity but if you are going to move in a couple of weeks anyway the electoral role will not be updated until the next date that the council have scheduled it and therefore, changing it may be purely an academic exercise.

I have a client in exactly this position at the moment and the council have refused point blank to update the electoral register until October when the client would have moved out anyway.

    just a thought.....

Absolutely, I do not think it will show in time but just as important to come off NI register..

Most of the automated credit score banks are unlikely to flag hugely, but when having to declare on application and banking facilities setup they really should.

I concur, do not think it will be a show-stopper either way but whilst on their minds...

Has he checked his credit report, as the addresses may be linked already if he has credit linked to his address here.
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • Depends on the situation, but you can be registered at both, as I am (NI and England). From the electoral roll website:

'If an elector is registered to vote in two different electoral areas, they are eligible to vote in local elections for the two different local councils. However, it is an offence to vote twice in any one election. Such an offence could result in a fine of up to £5,000.'

I would register in England, and not 'unregister' in NI. Just don't vote twice.
