I subscribed to Mcafee for one year. I use also, the free scanners as malwarebytes, Adaware, superantispayware as well as hijackthis which all have worked perfectly. I use each program in turn as they all throw up different results and do this every few weeks.
Mcafee suddenly yesterday, threw up a warning saying that 3 x keylogger programes have been detected which i thought was odd as Mcafee would have detected these as they came onto the computer and i also did scans the day before which showed up nothing including the Mcafee scan.
Today i get an email from Mcafee to remind me that my renewal is due in 59 days. Would this be some sort of scam of Mcafee trying to get you to sign up for another year. If they have detected 3 x keyloggers installed on my PC then that would prompt me to buy another year. Well, that's their plan.
Has anybody else ever experienced this or aware that this is a typical scam they play to get people to subscribe?

McAfee quite possibly wouldn't detect them as they came on to the computer.
The problem with McAfee is that along with Norton and Trend Micro it holds a significant proportion of the AV market (those three names account for roughly 70%) and so people who write malware and viruses will often set out to purposely evade the detection procedures of McAfee because there's a high chance that somebody is using it. This in turn means that McAfee is actually less effective and often won't catch a malicious file/program being installed and will only detect it after McAfee is aware of it and updates its virus database.
The "scam" that McAfee do pull though is to rebill your card, whether you ask them to or not. Even if you specifically tell them not to set up a recurring subscription plan where they bill you every year, quite often they go ahead and do it anyway, primarily so that when you inevitably phone up or contact their web team to complain and demand a refund they can then give you the hard sell and discount treatment to get you to stick with their underperforming program.0 -
