Nile cruise- How much walking involved?

Wife is recovering from a broken ankle, her walking is limited to about half a mile a day. We'd like to visit most of the sites but can anyone give us some idea whether shore transport is usually needed/provided on the average Nile cruise?

Places like the Valley of the Kings and Karnak Temple cover large areas and you'd easily be walking more than half-mile within the sites, I would say.
  • As bcl says, Karnack is a massive temple and would involve a lot of walking. Some of the others such as Edfu and Kom Ombo are not so bad.
You will be transported to the sites from the boat for some of them but others are just straight from the boat.
The ground will not always be even either and it wouldn't really be suitable at all in my opinion :(

Hi BryanB, I have rheumatoid arthritis and regularly travel to Luxor in Egypt (would be there now but DH is recovering from surgery).
It is possible to do a cruise with limited mobility, particularly if you take a seat stick (examples here) and pace yourselves.

Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae (Aswan) should not be much of a problem as they are relatively contained.
As has been said, Karnak is huge - but you don't have to walk every inch and wheelchairs are available at the entrance (cruise guide / tour rep should be able to phone ahead to arrange this without difficulty).
The Valley of the Kings has a land train from the gate to the monuments and shaded areas to rest in.

Lots of details on TripAdvisor's Luxor forum: here.
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.

When the boats moor up, they are sometimes 3, 4 or even more abreast so you may have to step across to get ashore.

They can be differnt heights too so it's not so easy if you're not that agile.
