Help - poor lighting on laptop screen

Switched on laptop and can barely read what's on the screen it's so dark. I've got it connected to mains not battery and I've checked out various Help indexes but can't find answer. Laptop is running on Windows XP.

Backlight failure. As it's XP, it is presumably a fairly old laptop?

Have you tried to turn the brightness up? It is usually keyboard buttons and not software. FN + [sun symbol with up arrow]

Thanks withabix I tried that but makes no difference. Laptop is 5 years old (is that old?) and it was fine yesterday.

    More suggestions gratefully received.

The backlight has failed - it is a hardware problem, and will have to be replaced. Depending on the laptop and your level of diy skill it is a fairly easy thing to change. You can get replacements online.
