Tax credit overpayment

I am being chased for tax credit overpayment which they say has arisen over 2007-2010 years. I haven't received any for 2years, however previous to this my wife and I separated then got back together twice. Each time I wrote to tell them of the situation, didn't phone as I'm hard of hearing. However I stupidly didn't keep copies of letters. Have I any comeback, I've old them that I had advised them at the time but they say I've no proof so am liable to pay :( any advice please??

when you change from joint to single or single to joint they do not treat this as a change like they would do income
For both you need to close the existing claim and start a new claim for joint/single whichever now applies. If the single claim was your wifes alone, I think she would be the one that would have to have closed it then either of you could have requested the new joint claim
