I do see what ou're saying but they're not just asking for a sofa (I assume they need something to sit on) but a particular type (or colour) of sofa.

Maybe it is just me but if I needed a sofa in the next two weeks and it was a choice of a cream one or nothing I'd take the cream one

OK, say you move into a house and you need a new sofa, you want to keep something out of landfill, so you ask on freecycle for a sofa............. OK
You don't want a cream one, because fgs even I don't want one. So you ask for another dark colour, after a couple of weeks, you will give in and buy a new one for yourself.
So, you want to keep a sofa out of landfill, you don't want to buy a new one.......... so you give it two weeks, if one hasn't turned up by then, you will buy a new one and probably watch someone drive to the tip as you go to buy it, dumping one you would want.........

In the past I have taken most things offered (if you turn it down you might not get the next offer) and it will be fantastic to have something new.
As far as chairs, sofas or settees offered in the past, my criteria has been
'can I park my @r$e on it without being accosted by an errant spring'
