When do I tell them?

I've recently qualified as a teacher and from September would have been working supply, I have been looking for a summer job, but there are very few around.

In the meantime I have signed on JSA, so recently I haven't even had the claim back yet, but out of the blue I've been offered a full time permanent teaching position :T

So when do I tell the job centre? They are expecting me to be actively looking for work, and looking for something for the holidays, which I have been daily, well now I don't need to look for the long term work, and I need to visit my school prior to the start of term on several occasions, to prepare my classroom etc. so getting a part time job could now prove tricky as I can only go into the school on the days it has been unlocked...what do I do?

  • You can tell them whenever you wish, but to continue claiming JSA you must continue to seek work.

Is there any reason not to keep looking for work as per your jobseeker's agreement? If you find temp work, then hopefully you will be able to fit it around your commitments prior to the new job starting; if you can't do this, there's no obligation to take the temp work (although your JSA may be stopped as a result of turning down work). If you don't find work, your JSA claim can continue till you start the perm job.

Congratulations on the new job! I don't see a reason not to tell the jobcentre: as long as you're fulfilling the requirement to look for work, you can claim JSA.

Just wanted to say congratulations! :)

  • well done, keep looking for temp work as said above, tell them you want to start teaching in September - thats not a lie
    xx
  • Ok, I will phone them tomorrow and tell them I have now got a permanent position secured and ask what happens now.

I am still looking for temp stuff, but living where I do, all the 'summer' jobs have gone to all the local teens, there really isn't anything left! Believe me I would rather be earning money instead of going through the hassle of JSA!

    Thanks for the advice.

Tell them when you are about to start - and continue to actively seek work....

    No problems....

This is what the job centre advised me to do when they knew I was starting at university.

PS well done, and good luck.

No offence to other posters who say different; their advice is what the JobCentre would say also, but I'm afraid I would suggest its not ideal.

DO NOT tell the JobCentre anything about this job offer until the day you walk in and begin working.
Continue searching for work to keep being eligible for JSA. You could search for either temporary or permanent positions if you are prepared to not tell them about the job amd give notice a week before; perfectly acceptable, if a little harsh on the employer.

I only say this because I gave advanced notice to them last time, but the job fell through as quite short notice: I was forced through their "rapid reclaim" system, which does nothing like the name suggests. They told me I should have waited until I had actually started before stopping my claim (although obviously no more than a day or two to prevent being overpaid benefit).
