Understanding Working Tax Credit Deduction

My earnings for the Tax period ending 5 April 2011 were £11,380.

I applied for WTC in June 2011 and received a letter confirming payments for the year ending 2011 for £585.79.

In July 2011 I received a further letter increasing the award to £2341.56.

I have renewed my application for the current year and they have awarded me £2715.60. However they have stated they overpaid £1739.23 from last year and are making deductions of £192.91 from my current payments and £1562.86 from future awards.

I don't understand how they came to this conclusion as my circumstances have not changed and they have been in receipt of the information from the start.

Can anybody give me advice?

  • Any Ideas anybody?
  • When they increased your award in July 2011 and, more recently, informed you of the overpayment they should have sent you details of their calculations.

Do you have these? If not, you will need to ask for them to understand what has happened.
If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it

What are your circumstances? Single, how many hours, children, disabilities.

    What was your 2011/12 income?

Those entitlement figures look very high for your circumstances. Have you checked each award notice very carefully. YOu need to find out what caused the increase in July 2011.

You can ring the helpline and ask them to tell you what changed in July 2011 to cause the increase.
