Does anyone know if you need any kind of training to do ear piercing and do you need a health and hygiene certificate?

find a local college that does nvq in beauty therapy. My step daughter is doing the course and one of the options is ear piercing, the spare places on the option courses are open to the public. They do 1 day for 6 weeks then you get your certificate

The only way to learn to do any piercing properly is to get an apprenticeship with a local body piercer. Anything they teach you on a course will be useless, as it isn't possible to do decent piercings with the guns they use.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

I agree with Juno.
The idea that 'beauty therapists' are somehow qualified to fire a bolt through your ear is bizarre. They should leave it to the professional piercers who use proper equipment.0 -

i guess the first and most obvious port of call - as already sugested - would be a local H&B course. if ear piercing is not something that they offer, then perhaps they can point you in the right direction.
as an aside, have you researched the cost of piercing equipment, autoclaves etc, to check before you begin that the price wont be prohibitive later down the line?know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
there are sometimes vacancies for piercers advertised in Tattoo magazine
so you might catch one for an apprenticeship< or you could place your own ad saying you@re after an apprenticeship< might be worth a try if its something you really want to do

Hi,
I did an apprenticeship with a body piercer and we offered needle piercing and gun piercing for ears in the shop. The gun we used wasn't one of the old ones that 'fired' the stud through the ear and could not be properly sterilised between clients. We used (it was made by 'Studex') was controlled by hand and the studs came in individual, single use, plastic spring cases that formed part of the 'gun'. This meant the parts that touched the client's ear were thrown away. The owner of the shop receieved training from the company she purchased the guns from.
Hope that helps!0 -
