On the hunt for cheap 'Nitro Mors'

Was wondering if anyone has seen 'Nitro Mors' on offer anywhere recently? I've recently bought my first little house and boy does it need some work! Nitro mors is helping massively, but it is not cheap.

Thought I'd ask on MSE forums as everytime I've googled for DIY advice/ideas something has come up on one of these forums. That's how I discovered Nitro Mors in first place.

Thanks all

I got some from Morrison's for a fiver.

I can't use it though as my table and chairs are oak, so you're welcome to it if you live near me?

Any tips for removing old varnish from oak would be very welcome :)

  • I'm in Liverpool, so unfortunately not worth the drive. Thanks for the offer though, really kind.

I'm not sure how you'd get rid of varnish. Sanding it wouldn't work well, the paper would 'gunge' up really quickly. Have you thought about trying a heat gun? Test it on the underside first.

Thanks KSaint, I might pluck up courage and give it a go, we've got a stack of junkshop furniture and none matches but I hate all that chipboard stuff.

Wilkinson do their own version, around £7.50 for 1L, cheaper than I've seen paint stripper anywhere else. I haven't used it yet, (I will), but I have used Homebase's own brand which did the job, and I imagine Wilkinson's would be similar.

ps - it would also remove varnish from oak.

    You could try these people:

    http://www.stripperspaintremovers.com/

They manufacture their own, and hence prices are reasonable. I've tried several of their strippers and they do work well. Oddly enough one I used is marked as for professional use only, whatever that means (no sales to private individuals?).

  • Barneysmom I've bought lots of junk shop furniture as well. Cheap, well built and a bit more character than items I could have bought in the big Swedish place (don't get me wrong, I do own stuff from there as well). So this weekend I have a date with some stripper, wire wool, rubber gloves and a lot of elbow grease.

I too have heard that paint stripper is the way forward for removing varnish. I was told to let it bubble once, scrape off, apply another coat and leave it for a very long time. Wire wool soaked in it for tough bits.

Thanks for all the suggestions for cheaper alternatives - perhaps a trip out and a comparison of the ingredients is the thing to do.

You have to be careful with oak as some strippers lift the grain?

I've got Old Charm stuff so don't want to wreck it, a brand new table and chairs would be pushing £3,000
