If anyone else is going to do shoeboxes please be aware some of the shoebox charities only give the shoeboxes out after the hopeful recipients have attended religious study classes and have converted to whatever religion the charity represents. It is often painted as a "religious leaflet" but in reality it's much more pressurised. I personally think these gifts should be given freely to the needy without bribing them.
I have never understood why the shoebox thing is almost always linked to a church. but there's a local church here which runs charity things and they're not in the least bit pressurised, I've been to a couple of things and have mentioned the fact that I'm an agnostic, and this has always been respected.
What I'm saying is while it's fine to heed your warning, it shouldn't put people off. As is normally the case, it's probably a bad few spoiling it for the majority
EDIT: Sorry, misread your post, I thought you were saying the people doing them had to convert not the people receiving them. If what you say is true and some places do this, it's despicable! However hopefully my point about the minority spoiling it is true, the church I mentioned gives things out to the people who need them regardless of religious background. No Buying Unnecessary Toiletries 2023

This is what I suspected would happen as mys 1st thing this morning had coke 8 packs for BOGOF in Tesco and Sainsburys so at least if you bought 2 you would get £3.85 back plus the 10%.
The tea though is still comparing - is it the same though for the purple box one - think its the evening one?Coke not working today

If anyone has a few too many cans of mushy peas kicking about (like me), here's a good idea for using them up...
We had another bout of summery weather up here on Sunday so I whacked a couple of tins of mushy peas in the slow cooker with a bit of stock, garlic and fried onions and some of the MaM ham...left it an hour or two and it was absolutely scrummy!

Its not something I've read before and I've been doing the christmas shoe boxes for donkeys years and I love ready up on where they are going etcI have never understood why the shoebox thing is almost always linked to a church. but there's a local church here which runs charity things and they're not in the least bit pressurised, I've been to a couple of things and have mentioned the fact that I'm an agnostic, and this has always been respected.

My Son's school collect the shoe boxes every year for charity, they are a Church of England school, we do regularly drop off our overspill at our local charity shops.
We don't leave anything out for doorstep collection anymore after I watched the travelling folk throwing the clothes they didn't want from the charity bags they stole, along the road on the way to thier caravan site. They didn't even stop when I drove past.0 -

I think that you were far too nice, I think I would have lost my rag totally.
The good service was a side issue, important but not as important as having no food.
As soon as I got the phone call I would have been on their fb page and finding a HQ number to ring.Call_of_Trouty wrote: »Just posted this on the Harvester facebook page
We had a meal for our sons 18th Birthday last night at Harvester, we had booked this 2 weeks previously because there was going to be 30 people turning up. We had a phone call 6 hours before the meal to say that they are running out of food and certain selections may not be available. It was too late to change so we went anyway.
When we arrived we were told that there was no jacket potatoes, only 8 oz steak, only 3 fish ( they reserved them for our group ) and other items not available. Most people had to have 2nd or 3rd choice meals but everyone got something in the end. I can't believe that a Harvester could run out of food half way through the week especially when we had booked 2 weeks previous.
On a positive note the staff were great, ESPECIALLY the young girl who took our orders, she could not have been more helpful and apologetic. The manager even sent someone out to get ice cream because they ran out even though everyone had free vouchers, they also didn't charge for any desserts.“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove.
