Ebay Laptop problem

Hi, my friend sold his laptop on Ebay last week and it was delivered on Friday. The guy who bought it, is saying it will not start up and then that he can't see the screen properly because it is too dim Now these 2 statements don't add up to me. I can confirm that the laptop was working perfectly last Thursday when my friend sent it because I helped him remove some of his personal stuff from it and I also helped him to package it. My friend has responded to him by saying it was working fine when he sent it but he is worried that the guy has broken it. What should he do next?

Thanks

Did you pack properly during shipping? Could you exclude the possibility of damage during shipping? Any shipping insurance purchased for the laptop?

Yes, i agree with Browntoa, better watch out for Paypal chargeback if the laptop was paid with Paypal.

Hi, I helped my friend package it with loads of bubble wrap so It should have been ok. I think he sent it with Royal Mail next day signed for but I don't know about the insurance. He did pay for it through Paypal though and I've told my friend he might go for a chargeback. He's sick because the laptop was working great when he sent it. I just reckon the guy has done something to it.

Sounds like the lamp in the screen could have gone

Would the Royal Mails sorting machine contain magnets does anyone know?

I hope you kept a note of all serial numbers and a photo of all relevant parts of the laptop. Always worth mentioning to the buyer that all your items are invisibly marked for security reasons. I also noticed on my daughters laptop that it is less bright when running from battery without the charger connected, maybe this has something to do with it, assuming he's got a genuine case of course.

Something feels 'off' about the buyer's complaint. Suggest your friend ask the buyer to return the item for inspection. Your friend will then refund buyer in full, on confirmation that it's the same unit and in the same condition as shipped to them. Offer apologies to buyer for any inconvenience they may have experienced (along with the usual platitudes designed) to soothe them until you get the laptop back and can see what's wrong.

Also, I'd inquire if the package they received had any visible damage - to prepare for an insurance claim with the carrier. Hint: when shipping any breakables - always warn the buyer NOT to open it if the package shows sign of damage. Instead return potentially-damaged packages back to the carrier and open it in their presence. Have a digital camera handy to take any photos of damage for insurance purposes - it makes damage claims so much easier.

Your friend should be prepared to have a different laptop returned, or one that has been opened and had the good components replaced with defective ones. Why? Variations on the "Buy, Switch and Return" scam are unfortunately quite common with consumer electronics items. Fortunately you can usually detect them by different serial numbers on the returned unit, and with computers - the serial numbers on internal components will likely be different as they been swapped out for dead or defective ones. Check for signs the returned laptop has be opened or tampered with. Hint: if you intend to report it as fraud to your local Police - wear rubber gloves to preserve the buyer's fingerprints on the returned unit. If they don't have a criminal record and index number - they soon will ;-)

Let us know how your friend gets on!

If I was you, I would ask for it to be returned via special delivery for a full refund.....
    I recon he's trying a fast one.

Ive had the same problem love. I sold an off road buggy for my nephew... 2 weeks laster the buyer wanted to bring it back for a full refund. I refused, as he could have taken parts off the engine in that 2 weeks. He's is now threatening court action.

    They will try anything love.

Luckily the buyer paid for the go-cart via cash and not paypal...... paypal stinks when it comes to chargebacks.
