Hmmm, there's a school of thought that is gaining in pace, rapidly, that goes along the lines of: being green, global warming etc etc, is all a load of tosh perpetrated by fools and supported by the Government as it gives them a never-ending stream of excuses to introduce new taxes and increase existing ones.

That might be a bit extreme - although the taxes part is undoubtedly true.

My bigger objection is those firms who cynically seize the opportunity to make a quick profit by playing the 'green card' on every overpriced service and product they provide. Oh look! a belly button fluff recycling device!

The scamming and taxes will inevitably cause a backlash.

When I get married , Tinker, I shall give her a curtain ring, and the wedding reception will be in my greenhouse den, with homebrew and elderberry wine.
She can even sleep with me if she wants.

There's more to it than just being green- it's letting people know you have everything you need and to spare a thought for others less fortunate than yourself.

Theoretically speaking, in the green-ness stakes adding another few goats to the world will only add more methane, so it's debateable whether that is greener than, for example, buying a chunk of rainforset to stop it being cleared for cattle.

if you love someone its not about having the biggest most expensive gifts is it who needs that i would rather friends and family do this http://www.oxfamunwrapped.com/ than give us gifts we already prob have.
but thats what makes everyone different i guess, some people have to have items around thm to feel happy some dont.
see look now you have wound me up i will not post again on this subject thanks.

I think this is a great site, full of fabulous ideas. Thank you Tinkerbell.

I guess the point to get accross is the association between 'green' and a load of hippy skin-flints!
That image still seems to stick, whereas an ethical wedding / lifestyle can be as glamourous and extravagant as you wish.

We all know that organic food or fairtrade clothing is more expensive, so it's a shame the image of being tight has not shifted.

I do understand people's cynicism about the whole green movement idea, thanks to the portrayal of the media, (and the lack of 'getting it' by the Government) but for those of us who believe in what we are doing, we just have to keep on going in our own small ways and not let other's opinions put us off.

each to their own and all that...............

    What an interesting concept!

Assuming your interpretation of 'ethical' is environmentally friendly, can you give us examples of a glamourous and extravagant lifestyle that is ethical?

This thread is about a website that organises weddings and simply attempts to cash-in using the magic words 'Green' and 'Environmentally friendly'

Whatever way a couple wish to organise their wedding is totally their perogative and should not be subject to scrutiny by the 'Green Police'.

However if they are having an 'all bells and whistles wedding' they shouldn't try and salve their conscience by pretending it is an ethical and environmentally sound wedding because the Vicar rides to church on a bicycle, and the six bridesmaid's dresses are made from pure silk bought from fair trade sources.

After all you only get married a few times in your life.

    Good morning, Cardew,

Thanks for your post. I too, am concerned about people jumping on the 'green bandwagon' but I do feel there are genuine people out there who want to provide a service for people as well.

Life is a question of balance and it's not much good to import yards of 'peace silk' if it has to be air freighted over here in order to get a fancy wedding dress. OTOH, it is *better* perhaps, than a polyester creation that is made in a sweat shop (that still has to be air freighted over here).

With regards to a wedding, I'm thinking more along the lines of seasonal, local flowers rather than pesticide riden flowers grown in hothouses, or delicious local, seasonal food for the reception rather than strawberries from wherever it is we import fat tasteless strawberries from

I just think that most brides want to do that glamourous thing (that is, afterall, what society has been telling us ever since fairy tales were first written), so if there are ways to do this which at least protect the environment a little then it is a good thing. It's a shame that 'green' is automatically associated with bearded hippies and sandals because this might stop people making more environmentally aware choices in favour of their 'glamourous' polyester..............

Essentially, perhaps we shouldn't give a damn and shouldn't buy into the hype of a wedding; I know I don't. A wedding is about a comitment to love, but for those who do, it might be good to support the more ethical businesses and services.

As you say, no one needs come under the scrutiny of the 'green police',

    When you write:

can I ask what you mean, specifically? I'm probably missing the point of what you have written - isn't it great if the vicar arrives on a bike??
