Cheapest way to travel around London? Family of 5

We are a family of 5, spending 4 days in London at the end of August and I'm not sure of the best ways to travel around? I've heard of an Oyster card but don't know if this is for families.
Ideally I would rather use the bus and will probably stick within zones 1-3 ish.
Any suggestions would be great, thank you

I get a travel card for train and underground, can also be used on buss es and some boats discount with showing the card. Then I only go for the day.The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0
