Currys cancelled order - second thoughts on their cashback?!

Options
Hello,

Just a vent really - I know I can do nothing about it (though I've sent them a stroppy email).

A few days ago Quidco/Currys were offering 10% cashback on laptops, including Apple ones - quite unusual I thought, and a decent deal, so I went for it and bought a 13" Macbook Air via it.

Today, 4 days later, they cancel the order with the email "we are unable to fulfill your order". ****!

And they still have the very item I ordered as Available for Home Delivery on their website!

Did anyone else order anything via this 10% cashback, and has their order been cancelled? Maybe I'm being really cynical, but it looks to me like they didn't quite realise what they were offering and decided they didn't want to payout.

I've put this to them in a slightly politer way via email so I'll see if they say anything and let you know.

Grumpily yours, Chris.

You could be right, it could be a mistake. 10% would be a huge amount of cashback on most laptops etc as that's around the margin the store makes, possibly more in some cases. Peripherals they make cash on, but laptops themselves tend to be very slim.
  • I wonder what would happen if you ordered the same laptop without the discount (bearing in mind DSRs mean you can cancel or return). If you did and it turned up, then it would be a bit obvious it's what they've done.
"So long and thanks for all the fish" :hello:

Read the sticky in this forum, you can't compel a retailer to sell to you at any particular price. Almost certainly it was a mistake, and the retailer has opted not to lose money on the sales. Whether or not they are still selling them full-price is neither here nor there.

Not 100% true. Having been a Web Manager, it's important to read what the T&Cs say. We were stuck for errors on pricing as our T&Cs said that the contract had been made at the point of receiving the order confirmation. Now our T&Cs say that the contract is only made at the point of dispatch confirmation. So if an error is made on our pricing we are within our rights to cancel up until the point we mark the order "dispatched".

You could have still rescinded the contract where the mistake was such that it would be obvious to a reasonable person.

At least the order didn't go though, and 3/4 months down the line the cashback doesn't come though as Currys claim that it was paid to another company.

You're right of course - but in this case, DSG headed that one off a decade ago ;-)

I quite like it when the retailer cancels the order (or I do) and the cashback gets paid, which happens quite often!

Unless they have tightened up their systems you may still get the cashback ;)
