OP How many years experience have you got and what grade are you?
There are so many opportunities for nurses now-tissue viability link nurse, infection control nurse, modern matrons, outpatient leads-would any of these interest you?

How about becoming dual qualified? There are some really exciting developments in neuroscience and these post are always asking for dual qualifications in adult and mental health.

You could convert to Midwifery or Health Visiting-there is a bursary in place for conversion to HV I think(check with uni)

How about being a school nurse?

I think if you left the profession altogether you might regret it later...and they do say a change is as good as a rest!

I have been working for the NHS for 10 years now. And of all the past areas i have been i still find Plastics (i.e. dressings, equipments, etc.) as a "top" passion or option.

I could go for a Medical Sales Rep i suppose but then again that would not probably be enough to satisfy the hours needed to renew my PIN yearly.

Not keen on health visiting (as i trained and gained my nursing qualification outside of the UK so i might not get a proper standing or acceptance in that respect and like i said if it involves MH then i find that not my cup of tea) and havn't thought about school nursing though. (Can anyone tell me more about that please?)

To be honest my aim at the moment is torn between two: staying as a nurse (just to keep/maintain my PIN) and going to something totally different from being a nurse (anything from tech/gadgets to part-time in a restaurant maybe).

My other priority is also the salary. if i could find a £25-£30k (or more) annual job then the better as i feel i am somehow (over) qualified for the jobs i've mentioned above. This is simply economics i.e. to pay for the various bills and the monthly rental.

You're unlikely to find a job in 'tech/gadgets' that pays anything like what you want (which is what a lot of people would love to be earning in a fun field with no experience also!). Part-time waiting will not make you £30k, I assure you.

It is possible to be over-qualified in one area and as good as useless in another. If you leave your niche, you're back to square one, unless you can bring something unique to it. If you're reviewing technogadgets for instance, specialise in medical gadgets. If you want to work in a restaurant, maybe there's some kind of private hospital tie-in? Otherwise you're no better/possibly significantly worse than the next guy off the street.

Be aware as a sales rep, you'll be foremostly expected to be able to SELL - you'll have a poor salary but lots of commission, and likely you'll see a big income drop until you are a good salesman (which the medical background doesn't really help with, although it gives you credibility with buyers).

How about being a school nurse? Would it be another option?

As regards being a medical sales rep would i qualify as being a higher "band" (or manager) based on my qualifications? and what or where will my commission come from?

Also, what IT or computer course would be the most common or practical to take if i want to start a career/job on IT/computers/tech?
  • ATOS are likely to be recruiting for medical assessors ...

First question - definately an option, I don't know if some schools have nurses now, although I recently heard of one that covers an area of schools.

Second question - nope. If you had previous employment in sales or marketing, that might put you in a higher band, but medical background won't. I speak from bitter experience there! Your commission would of course come from the sales you make as a sales rep...

Very unlikely - after all, what would make you senior *as a sales rep*? Yes, your medical experience beats many others, but who cares? It's a *sales* job, seniority will be for the best salesperson, the one shifting the units, the one who employs and trains you. Commission will be based on one of many various schemes, but roughly speaking you'll have to shift a certain value of goods each month and get a slice of the sales value of anything you sell over that level.

I have heard that these so-called telephone Nurse Medical Advisers/Assessors are also good. Not because they are (perhaps) pay you good but i feel that one of my strengths is giving advice over the phone. I feel very confident in my fields of expertise (like Plastics or ENT) and i would definitely would like to try or at least give it a try.

Aside from ATOS where and how do i start looking? which company or agencies?

    Please advice.

Why not look into work in a private Plastics hospital. Loads aout but v discreet. Nicer working conditions than NHS and you could be better paid.

I am a Vet Nurse and if I were a human nurse I know plastics, especially burns recuperation/rehab would really interest me.

I have moved into education for variety and better pay.
